Abigail (Abby) Dizon-Maughan, a shareholder in Parsons Behle & Latimer’s Salt Lake City office, gave the opening remarks at "Sharing Stories about America: The Utah Legal Community Celebrates America250,” an event on May 21 in Salt Lake City.
Held at the Grand America Hotel, the half-day symposium was presented by the Utah State Bar in partnership with the America250 Utah, the Federal Bar Association of Utah, the Utah Bar Litigation Section and Utah Lawyers for Good Policy. The event was scheduled in correlation with the nationwide America250 commemoration, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Dizon-Maughan, representing the Utah State Bar’s Litigation Section, welcomed attendees and addressed the oath that lawyers take to uphold and defend our nation’s Constitution.
Reflecting on the Declaration of Independence, Dizon-Maughan commented on her appreciation for its message of courage, resilience and the people’s right to protect liberty by challenging governments that threaten fundamental human rights. Emphasizing the themes of being “resolute, courageous and defiant,” she tied these ideals to the legal profession, stating that lawyers have a particular duty to defend the Constitution of the United States, the judiciary and the nation’s democratic institutions against growing threats.
